Financial services — Universal financial industry message scheme Part 1: Metamodel Published (Edition 3, 2026)

What is ISO 20022?

ISO 20022 is a multi‑part International Standard developed by ISO for the electronic exchange of structured data in the financial services industry. The series, titled Financial services — Universal financial industry message scheme, provides a common framework for describing business processes, data elements, and financial messages used by banks, payment systems, and other financial institutions.

ISO 20022 is widely used for payments, including domestic and cross‑border transactions, and also supports messaging in areas such as securities, trade services, cards, and foreign exchange. By using a shared business vocabulary and consistent message structures, the standard helps improve interoperability and data quality across financial systems.

What is ISO 20022-1?

ISO 20022-1 is part 1 of the ISO 20022 standard series and defines the foundational framework for the standard. It specifies the metamodel used for the creation and maintenance of message standards across the financial services industry, ensuring that all ISO 20022 messages are designed in a consistent and structured way.

Rather than defining individual payment or transaction messages, ISO 20022‑1 sets out the modeling principles that underpin the entire ISO 20022 series. This common foundation supports interoperability and long‑term consistency across financial messaging implementations.

Why is ISO 20022-1 important?

ISO 20022-1 is crucial for ensuring seamless and efficient communication across different financial systems and platforms globally. By providing a unified standard, it facilitates better integration and compatibility among disparate financial systems, reducing complexity and enhancing transaction processing speed and reliability.

What are the benefits of ISO 20022-1?

ISO 20022-1 provides a structured methodology for designing financial messages, offering several key benefits:

Enhanced interoperability: Facilitates smooth interaction between various financial institutions and systems worldwide
Improved efficiency: Reduces processing errors and delays by standardizing message formats and protocols
Increased flexibility: Supports a wide range of financial services, adapting to various business needs and regulatory requirements
Future-proofing: Regular updates ensure the standard remains relevant in the face of rapidly evolving financial technologies and practices.

In short, it ensures ISO 20022 messages are consistent, efficient, and scalable.
